Safe to delete

Where is the Discord cache on Mac? Is it safe to delete?

Short answer

Yes, the Discord cache is safe to delete. It holds copies of images, videos and other content you have already seen, and Discord downloads them again when you scroll back to them.

Where it is

~/Library/Application Support/discord/Cache

What it is

Discord is an Electron app, which means it is built on the same engine as the Chrome browser and caches things the same way. Every image, GIF, video and avatar that appears in a channel is saved in ~/Library/Application Support/discord/Cache.

Two smaller folders next to it, Code Cache and GPUCache, hold compiled scripts and graphics data. They are just as disposable.

It grows the more servers you are in and the more media passes through them. The rest of the discord folder holds your settings and sign-in, so remove only the cache folders.

How big it gets

Often several hundred MB, and a few GB if you are active in servers with a lot of images and video.

How to clear it by hand

  1. Quit Discord completely. Check the menu bar and the Dock, since it can keep running in the background.
  2. In Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder and enter ~/Library/Application Support/discord.
  3. Move the Cache, Code Cache and GPUCache folders to the Trash. Leave everything else in the folder.
  4. Open Discord again. The command below shows the size of the three folders if you want to check first.
In Terminal
du -sh ~/Library/Application\ Support/discord/Cache ~/Library/Application\ Support/discord/Code\ Cache ~/Library/Application\ Support/discord/GPUCache

What happens afterwards

Discord opens a little more slowly the first time, and images and videos load again as you scroll. You stay signed in, and your messages, servers and settings are stored by Discord, not in this cache.

How Diskzy handles it

Diskzy lists Electron app caches such as Discord's in the Clean up tab, ticked unless the app is open. What it removes goes to the Trash.
