How to completely uninstall Signal on Mac

Dragging Signal to the Trash removes the app itself, but its support files, caches and settings stay on your Mac. Here is where they are and how to remove all of them.

Good to know

Everything Signal Desktop stores, including your message history and attachments on this Mac, is in ~/Library/Application Support/Signal. Messages are not kept on Signal's servers, so this folder is the only copy of this Mac's history.

Before you start

Removing the support folder deletes this Mac's message history. Save any attachments you need first. Afterwards you can remove this computer under Linked devices in Signal on your phone.

Remove Signal by hand

  1. Quit Signal. If it has a menu bar icon or runs in the background, quit that too.
  2. Open the Applications folder and drag Signal to the Trash.
  3. In Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder (Shift-Command-G), paste each location below, and move what you find to the Trash. Not every location exists for every version.
  4. Empty the Trash, then restart your Mac so nothing from Signal is left running.

The quick way

Diskzy finds Signal and the files listed here, shows the size of each one, and moves them to the Trash together. Files that another app also uses are left alone.
