How to completely uninstall ChatGPT on Mac

Dragging ChatGPT to the Trash removes the app itself, but its support files, caches and settings stay on your Mac. Here is where they are and how to remove all of them.

Good to know

Since OpenAI merged the Codex desktop app into ChatGPT in July 2026, the current ChatGPT app uses the bundle identifier com.openai.codex and stores its data under Codex folders. Older versions used com.openai.chat, so a Mac that has had both may hold leftovers from each.

Before you start

Your chats are stored in your OpenAI account. The ~/.codex folder is shared with the Codex command line tool, so keep it if you still use that.

Bundle identifier: com.openai.codex

Remove ChatGPT by hand

  1. Quit ChatGPT. If it has a menu bar icon or runs in the background, quit that too.
  2. Open the Applications folder and drag ChatGPT to the Trash.
  3. In Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder (Shift-Command-G), paste each location below, and move what you find to the Trash. Not every location exists for every version.
  4. Empty the Trash, then restart your Mac so nothing from ChatGPT is left running.

Where ChatGPT keeps its files

Other places ChatGPT uses

Items under /Library need your administrator password to remove.

The quick way

Diskzy finds ChatGPT and the files listed here, shows the size of each one, and moves them to the Trash together. Files that another app also uses are left alone.
