How to completely uninstall Steam on Mac

Dragging Steam to the Trash removes the app itself, but its support files, caches and settings stay on your Mac. Here is where they are and how to remove all of them.

Good to know

Installed games are by far the largest part. By default they sit in ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps, so removing that folder removes every game you have downloaded.

Before you start

Check that Steam Cloud has synced your saves, and back up saves for games that do not support it. Games can be downloaded again from your library, but large ones take a while.

Bundle identifier: com.valvesoftware.steam

Remove Steam by hand

  1. Quit Steam. If it has a menu bar icon or runs in the background, quit that too.
  2. Open the Applications folder and drag Steam to the Trash.
  3. In Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder (Shift-Command-G), paste each location below, and move what you find to the Trash. Not every location exists for every version.
  4. Empty the Trash, then restart your Mac so nothing from Steam is left running.

The quick way

Diskzy finds Steam and the files listed here, shows the size of each one, and moves them to the Trash together. Files that another app also uses are left alone.
