How to completely uninstall Visual Studio Code on Mac

Dragging VS Code to the Trash removes the app itself, but its support files, caches and settings stay on your Mac. Here is where they are and how to remove all of them.

Good to know

Settings, workspace storage and caches are in ~/Library/Application Support/Code, and installed extensions are in ~/.vscode, which is often the larger of the two.

Before you start

Turn on Settings Sync, or copy settings.json, keybindings.json and your snippets from ~/Library/Application Support/Code/User. Your project folders are not touched.

Bundle identifier: com.microsoft.VSCode

Remove VS Code by hand

  1. Quit VS Code. If it has a menu bar icon or runs in the background, quit that too.
  2. Open the Applications folder and drag VS Code to the Trash.
  3. In Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder (Shift-Command-G), paste each location below, and move what you find to the Trash. Not every location exists for every version.
  4. Empty the Trash, then restart your Mac so nothing from VS Code is left running.

The quick way

Diskzy finds VS Code and the files listed here, shows the size of each one, and moves them to the Trash together. Files that another app also uses are left alone.
